| Our 51-year-old protagonist entertaining himself in the 'snow pit' |
Last Thursday was my 51st birthday and we celebrated with a trip to
The Reindeer Centre, Capralama Farm, Bethersden (
to see the animals, say hello to Santa etc).
My original plan had been to see a couple of exhibitions in London, but I changed my mind and went for a tried-and-trusted favourite.
I came to the conclusion, after a session with my counsellor, that while the exhibitions interested me, I had the catalogues/books associated with them and didn't see what else I could get from the experience (on top of the hassle of getting there), whereas the opportunity to be around animals was a sure-fire guarantee of making me happy.
Rachel and I left Alice with Rachel's parents, and headed to the farm in deepest, darkest east Kent.
We've been plenty of times before, but it never fails to be a magical day out.
As well as being great value for money, it's clearly run with love. All the staff are amazing, friendly, knowledgeable, and caring.
Year-on-year things change (I'm sure there were more animatronics outside Santa's grotto this year, for instance) , but it never loses its very British charm and naivete.
This isn't a slick, corporate affair, but a fun place to visit for children of all ages.
And we cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone in this neck of the woods - especially if you have kids, behave like kids, or just love Christmas.
I got to feed a variety of animals, pet a giant tortoise called Carter, play in a faux-snow pit (there were no children about), eat my first mince pie (don't ask!), pose with Santa for some pictures, and generally hold onto my childhood for another year.
There's a mighty album on Facebook with all our pictures from the day if you're interested in seeing a couple of adults behaving like wide-eyed children.

Escape Artist: Shortly after this picture was taken, this reindeer scrambled out of his enclosure into the (thankfully empty) pen next door... much to the amazement of Rachel and I |

| First Mince Pie: Hard to believe I've gone half-a-century without eating a mince pie! |

| What Goes Up: Must come down! |
