As an ex-journalist, I'm fascinated by language and the power of words. On the geeky front, this was brought home to me following some of the online discussion around the f-bomb dropped during an episode of the new Star Trek show on Netflix.

It really surprised me how twee and dated a large proportion of the American audience was in respect to "harsh language", as compared to European sensibilities.

Words such as 'damn' I wouldn't even consider a swear and 'shit' is so mild as to not even raise an eyebrow.

But all this correlates nicely with some recent research by Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, on the attitudes of people in the UK to swearing, sexual references, and gestures on the shows they watch.

You can see how the survey results broke down words and gestures by degrees in the tables on this page, and find the full report via Ofcom's site here.

Don't read on if the sight of VERY strong language offends you...

PS. Science says swearing is a sign of high intelligence!
