In the ever-changing (fickle?) cycle of my fandoms, this time of year is traditionally when Doctor Who comes to fore once more - usually spurred on my build-up in promotional material for the Christmas special.

Having been seriously underwhelmed by last year's Christmas story - The Return of Doctor Mysterio - my enthusiasm stumbled for a while, until Season 10 (of nuWho) began and we met The Doctor's new companion, the bubbly Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie).

My overall love for the show had been in the doldrums as I'd found myself increasingly at odds with showrunner Steven Moffat's vision for the Whoniverse, but somehow the knowledge that this was his last season guiding Doctor Who and the arrival of Bill in the TARDIS (a character too good to last, a beautifully tragic companion like Donna Noble) lured me back.

I really enjoyed the series, its highs and lows, more Missy, the heavy hints about what was to come, the redemption of Nardole (Matt Lucas) as a character.

It wasn't so much about the individual stories as the overarching sense of inevitable change that permeated the season, that made it work so well for me.

Which brings us to now.

Twice Upon A Time, the Christmas Day episode, is next month (with a preview this Friday on Children In Need), and then it's all change.

The Doctor is not only regenerating, but regenerating into a woman.

Something, I'll admit, for the longest time, I thought would never - should never - happen and I just couldn't get my head around.

But then it did... and I couldn't be more excited. I'm quite often proved wrong in my rambling commentary of geeky matters, and there are times when I'm delighted to be shown the error of my ways.

And I'm hoping this is one such occasion.

Beyond her outward appearance and choice of travelling companions, we know nothing about Jodie Whittaker's Doctor.

So I'm optimistic; genuinely excited to see what changes, what stays the same.

Change is an integral part of the DNA of both The Doctor (the character) and Doctor Who (the show), and, as averse as I am to change in 'real life', I always welcome it in my fandoms.
